Although surface waterbodies are water sources for socio‐economic activities and ecosystems, their functions are threatened by sedimentation. Sedimentation of lakes and reservoirs can result in a loss of storage capacity and altered water quality. The present study assessed the sedimentation status of Lake Naivasha, Kenya, based on sediment distribution and accumulation over the past 50 years, using a Bathymetric Survey System (BSS). The BSS uses multi‐frequency Acoustic Profiling System (APS) to map recently deposited sediments. Sediment core samples were collected with a vibe‐ coring device and dated. Sediment layers corresponding to a period of the past 20 and 50 years were identified. Sediment cores and acoustic images were subsequently used to determine sediment thickness within the lake. The collected depth data from multi‐frequency APS, and dated cores were processed in DepthPic and Surfer software. The sediment depth was extracted in DepthPic, while the sediment volume and distribution were generated from Surfer software. The results from present study indicated that sediment distribution varied from one part of the lake to another for the past 20 and 50 years. High sediment thickness observed in the south‐west and eastern parts of the lake. Between 1996–2016 and 1966–2016 periods, the maximum accumulated sediment thickness was found to be about 0.55 and 1.9 m, with an average sediment thickness of 0.25 and 0.56 m, respectively. The mean sediment load corresponding to the 1966–1996 and 1996–2016 periods was 2.78 × 105 and 4.61 × 105 t/year, respectively. It was found that sediment load into Lake Naivasha has been increasing in the recent past. Based on the present the study, it was found that combined use of BSS, sediment cores and dating can be adopted in many lakes and reservoirs to determine sediment thicknesses even where no prior bathymetric surveys exist for comparison. 相似文献

An array of quantum rings with local (ring by ring) modulation of the spin orbit interaction (SOI) can lead to novel effects in spin state transformation of electrons. It is shown that already small (3 x 3, 5 x 5) networks are remarkably versatile from this point of view: Working in a given network geometry, the input current can be directed to any of the output ports, simply by changing the SOI strengths by external gate voltages. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209), the major congener in the high volume industrial flame retardant mixture "DecaBDE", has recently been shown to be metabolized by carp. To further explore this phenomenon, juvenile rainbow trout were exposed to BDE 209 via the diet for a five month period. Analysis of the whole body homogenate, liver, serum, and intestinal tissues revealed that BDE 209 accumulated in rainbow trout tissues and was most concentrated in the liver. In addition to BDE 209, several hepta-, octa-, and nonaBDE congeners also accumulated in rainbow trout tissues over the same period as a result of BDE 209 debromination. Based on the total body burden of the hepta- through decaBDE congeners, uptake of BDE 209 was estimated at 3.2%. Congener profiles were different among whole body homogenate, liver, and serum, with the whole body homogenates having a greater contribution of the debrominated biotransformation products. Extracts of the rainbow trout whole body homogenates were compared with extracts from a previous experiment with common carp. This comparison revealed that BDE 202 (2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octabromodiphenyl ether) was a dominant debromination product in both studies. To determine whether the observed debromination was metabolically driven, liver microsomal fractions were prepared from both common carp and rainbow trout. Analysis of the microsomal fractions following incubation with BDE 209 revealed that rainbow trout biotransformed as much as 22% of the BDE 209 mass, primarily to octa- and nonaBDE congeners. In contrast, carp liver microsomes biotransformed up to 65% of the BDE 209 mass, primarily down to hexaBDE congeners. Monascus sp. are used for the production of red yeast rice, which has been applied in Asian food and medicine for centuries. The fungi form several secondary metabolites, among others the monascopyridines A and B. We have now detected two new monascopyridines (named C and D) with similar UV absorption spectra and maxima at 306-307 nm in red rice fermented with M. purpureus. The new monascopyridines have the same chromophores as the already known and differ in a missing gamma-lactone ring only. Monascopyridine C has a hexanoyl side chain, whereas monascopyridine D is the higher homologue with an octanoyl side chain. The toxicological properties of monascopyridines were studied using immortalized human kidney epithelial cells, displaying cytotoxic effects in micromolar concentrations with median effective concentration values between 20.7 and 43.2 micromol/L, depending on the compound and method used. The monascopyridines C and D did not induce apoptosis. However, they caused a rise of the mitotic index from 3.21 +/- 0.27% (control) to maximum 8.14 +/- 0.89% (monascopyridine D) by an accumulation of cells in the metaphase with a simultaneous decrease of cells in the ana- and telophase. Monascopyridine-induced metaphase arrest is caused by a partial or complete loss of the spindle apparatus as indicated by the occurrence of abnormal metaphases and immunological staining of alpha-tubulin. These effects are indicating an aneuploidic potential and therefore the monascopyridines C and D might contribute to tumor formations. 相似文献

Deformation mechanisms under tensile loading at room temperature have been studied in a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy containing close to 50 vol.% γ′. In order to identify the effect of γ′ particle size on deformation mechanisms, model microstructures with unimodal γ′ size distributions were developed. The investigations were carried out by combining in situ loading experiments using neutron diffraction and two-site elasto-plastic self-consistent plasticity modelling with detailed post-mortem electron microscopy. The microscopy work also includes results for samples strained at 500 °C. During early plastic deformation, the diffraction data demonstrate that γ and γ′ display the same elastic strain response, indicating that at this stage γ′ is cut by dislocations regardless of the γ′ particle size. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed an abundance of shearing processes in all three microstructures, hence supporting the conclusions drawn from the diffraction experiment. As the material is further deformed, elastic load transfer from γ to γ′ was observed in the medium (130 nm) and coarse (230 nm) γ′ microstructures but not in the fine (90 nm) γ′ microstructure. The load transfer can be explained by assuming that Orowan looping becomes an additional operative deformation mode. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that in the fine γ′ microstructure deformation takes place by strongly coupled dislocations cutting the γ′, while the medium and coarse γ′ microstructures showed additional signs of Orowan looping. 相似文献

This research investigates the level and degradation of oil at ten selected Gulf saltmarsh sites months after the 2010 BP Macondo-1 well oil spill. Very high levels (10-28%) of organic carbon within the heavily oiled sediments are clearly distinguished from those in pristine sediments (<3%). Dissolved organic carbon in contaminated pore-waters, ranging up to hundreds of mg/kg, are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than those at pristine sites. Heavily oiled sediments are characterized by very high sulfide concentrations (up to 80 mg/kg) and abundance of sulfate reducing bacteria. Geochemical biomarkers and stable carbon isotope analyses fingerprint the presence of oils in sediments. Ratios of selected parameters calculated from the gas chromatograph spectra are in a remarkable narrow range among spilled oils and initial BP crude. At oiled sites dominated by C(4) plants, δ(13)C values of sediments (-20.8 ± 2.0‰) have been shifted significantly lower compared to marsh plants (-14.8 ± 0.6‰) due to the inflow of isotopically lighter oil (-27 ± 0.2‰). Our results show that (1) lighter compounds of oil are quickly degraded by microbes while the heavier fractions of oil still remain and (2) higher inputs of organic matter from the oil spill enhance the key microbial processes associated with sulfate reducing bacteria. 相似文献
